Constantinides passes solar energy bill

The City Council passed a bill unanimously last week to promote the use of solar energy in city-owned buildings.

The legislation requires the city to write an online report every other year identifying which buildings should install solar panels. The report will include how much energy the panels would create, how carbon emissions would be reduced and the cost effectiveness of the initiative.

For each city building that don’t install the panels, the report would include why it’s not feasible and any environmentally friendly alternatives.

Councilman Costa Constantinides, who chairs the council’s environmental protection committee and is the primary sponsor of the bill, said the reports will increase transparency on the city’s use of renewable energy.

“The online reports will include cost-benefit estimates, which will be useful for private property owners who are interested in installing solar panels on their own homes,” he said. “They’ll be able to save green by going green.”

“The policy will help bring us closer toward our goal of increasing solar capacity and decreasing our carbon emissions 80% by 2050,” Constantinides added.
