A 45-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run at the intersection of 21st Street and 30th Road on Wednesday night, according to police.

At about 11 p.m., officers found the man lying in the middle of the roadway with severe trauma to the body. The man was brought to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the driver left the scene before cops arrived. There have been no arrests so far and the investigation is ongoing.

In a statement, Councilman Costa Constantinides said the intersection has long been a danger to the community.

“Since 2014, we have been speaking with DOT about traffic safety measures on this corner,” Costantinides said. “The lack of a traffic light here is exacerbated by the surroundings, including the Variety Boys & Girls Club where children attend programs and classes every day.”

Matthew Troy, the executive director of the Variety Boys & Girls Club, said the dangerous intersection was “right at our doorstep.”

“On behalf of the hundreds of children and their families that attend the Variety Boys & Girls Club each day, we urge the city to immediately install a crosswalk and traffic signal,” Troy said in a statement. “We ask the community to support this effort so that no other family will have to suffer a similar tragedy.”
