Simotas honors Black History essay contest participants
Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas honored 92 eighth-grade students from IS 141 and IS 10 last week with a New York State Assembly Certificate of Merit for participating in her Black History Essay Contest.
Three students from IS 141 were chosen as the winners: Madison Moreno, Alexander Ram and Constantina Terzidi.
“The student essays explored struggles and triumphs in profiling extraordinary black figures,” Simotas said. “It is necessary for us to lead our students into the future educated by the past.
The content of their essays included historical figures like Langston Hughes, Jackie Robinson and Dr. Alexa Irene Canady, the first African American neurosurgeon in the country.
“Your essays were remarkable because of your insight and writing ability,” Simotas added. “I congratulate each of you for a job well done.”
