Participatory budgeting assemblies announced

IMG_2442Starting next month, community members can help decide which projects are worthy of $1 million in city funding.

The participatory budgeting cycle is starting up again in September. District residents ages 14 and over can participate in Neighborhood Assemblies to brainstorm project ideas.

Here’s the schedule for the Neighborhood Assemblies:

  • September 14, 6 p.m. – Queensview Community Room #2, 33-64 21st Street.
  • September 18, 7 p.m. – Cretans Association, 32-33 31st Street.
  • September 20, 7 p.m. – Astoria Houses Community Center, 4-05 Astoria Boulevard.
  • September 27, 6 p.m. – Bohemian Hall, 29-19 24th Avenue.

“Every year I look forward to hearing from residents about projects in which they would like to invest,” said Councilman Costa Constantinides. “The enthusiasm we’ve seen from voters is what has made Participatory Budgeting a success in previous cycles.”

Last year, residents cast 3,600 votes. Winning projects included new tree plantings, bus countdown clocks, upgrades at public libraries and upgrades to STEM labs at The Young Women’s Leadership School of Astoria.
