TONIGHT: Astoria Park Visioning Session

anchor-park-11-16-16After Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the city’s new Anchor Parks Initiative over the summer, Astoria Park was selected as one of five parks to receive $30 million.

Now, Astoria residents will have a say in deciding how they money will be spent.

Councilman Costa Constantinides and the Department of Parks and Recreation will host a visioning session tonight at Bohemian Hall (29-19 24th Avenue). Residents are encouraged to attend to give in their two cents.

“The Anchor Park $30 million investment for Astoria Park will transform our neighborhood’s vital greenspace,” Constantinides said. “The funding will bring historic improvements to the playing fields, playgrounds and lawns.”

The Astoria Park Alliance (APA) has some ideas of its own. Here are some recommendations they have, with sustainability in mind:

  • Investing in sustainable horticulture and beautification, such as landscaping to address erosion, planting native species and flower beds and low-maintenance, drought-resistance trees
  • Refurbishing and expanding comfort stations
  • Implementing universal Wi-Fi
  • Adding solar-powered LED lights for safety
  • Repaving all hard surfaces
  • Establishing safer shore access for park users
  • Removing fences where it’s possible
  • Using temporary storage cubbies for non-valuable items
  • Having rental equipment for sports like bocce, ping pong and volleyball
  • Creating an environmentally-friendly soccer field within the track (this idea was also proposed by Councilman Constantinides)

What are your ideas to improve Astoria Park?
