Simotas to share immigrant experience at Queens Historical Society
Astoria Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas will participate in the Queens Historical Society’s Immigrant Voices Series as a guest speaker at an event on October 17.
Simotas, a native of Greece, immigrated to Astoria with her family when she was an infant and has lived in the neighborhood ever since.
She was the first Greek-American woman to be elected to office in New York.
“Astoria has a beautiful tradition of welcoming immigrants from all parts of the world,” she said. “While I am proud of my Greek heritage, I am also proud that my community is a place where anyone, no matter what their nationality, ethnicity or religious backgrounds can make a better life for themselves.”
Simotas will speak about her experiences as a Greek-American woman and the immigrant experience in Queens.
The half-hour talk will be followed by a Q&A session.
The event will be be on October 17th from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Queens Historical Society, located at 143-35 37th Avenue in Flushing.
Tickets are free for members, $3 for students and seniors, and $5 for adults.
