Astoria street to be co-named ‘Dennis Syntilas Way’ after civic leader
After Introduction 0849 was passed by the City Council last Thursday, Astoria civic leader Dennis Syntilas will be one of 51 New Yorkers who will have streets named after them.
The bill stated the co-naming of 30th Avenue, between 29th and 30th streets, to be “Dennis Syntilas Way.”
Syntilas, who passed away in January, was the founder of the Greek-American Homeowners Association. Additionally, Syntilas helped to create Athens Square Park, a park and amphitheater on 30th Avenue. Adding Grecian character to the neighborhood, the park features sculptures of philosopher Socrates and the goddess Athena.
Astoria City Councilman, Costa Constantinides, praised Syntilas’ work for the community, saying he “worked to improve Astoria by promoting Hellenic and Democratic values,” in a press release.
The street renaming bill will take effect after it is signed by Mayor Bill de Blasio.
