Planet Fitness on Steinway likely to get 10-year extension

A Planet Fitness gym located at 30-33 Steinway Street is well on its way to receiving a 10-year extension.

Last week, Community Board 1 voted unanimously (with one abstention) to approve a BSA application to extend the term of the “physical culture establishment.”

The gym has been operating since 2010, but its special permit, which is required to allow gyms to operate in commercial spaces, expired on December 1, 2018.

The establishment then has two years after the expiration of its special permit to seek an extension.

The Planet Fitness operates on the cellar, first and second floors of a two-story commercial building.

Board members said there have been no complaints over the last decade that the gym has been in operation. But they did note the need for improved lighting and trash pickup on nearby Newtown Road.

Otherwise, the board said, there were no objections.

The application now heads to the BSA with CB1’s approval in tow.
