Pol wants to save union jobs at incoming supermarket

With the Astoria Key Food on the way out, an Astoria representative wants the building’s owner to preserve good union jobs at whichever supermarket comes next.

State Senator Mike Gianaris called on Jenel Real Estate to protect union jobs and access to an affordable supermarket as the COVID-19 pandemic goes on.

“Despite our community’s legitimate concerns, Jenel Real Estate has decided it is going to forge ahead with its plans to displace a union-friendly supermarket in the midst of a pandemic,” he said.

“By dismissing the needs of our neighborhood, it has demonstrated a disregard for the people it supposedly wants to serve.”

The Key Food is set to close in October, with another supermarket and a Target coming in its place.
